Which AI models make the best vector art?

Posted: in Design

We all know that AI is great at making bitmap images, but what about vectors?

Anyone with even a passing interest in design knows the power of vector files. Unlike bitmap images made up of individual pixels, vector files use mathematical coordinates and instructions to define how the artwork should be rendered. They can be scaled to any size, making them the preferred format for logo designers and large format printers, whilst illustrators are also keen.

But how do LLMs perform when it comes to generating vector files rather than bitmaps? To find out we tested the 4 big dogs against each other in a battle to generate the best svg file. Here’s the prompt:

“Create a vector sticker design as an svg file. Is should be approximately 100mm in width. It should have the word ‘STICKER’ in a fun font. The text should be green in colour and there should be a cut path following the shape of the text, but offset by approx 5mm. The stroke on the cut path should be magenta.”

🥇 Gemini 2.5 Pro

Gemini put together a nice looking design, with a suitably fun font in a fine British Racing Green. The offset was filled rather than stroked in magenta, but aside from that the finished result is tidy.

🥈 GPT 5

A decent attempt from ChatGPT but the offset is less than the 5mm requested, and again a fill is used rather than a stroke.

🥉 Claude 4.5

Claude missed the memo on the offset custom shape, opting instead for a basic rectangle that slices through the ends of the text. Whilst Arial Bold is a fabulous font, fun it is not (in this context) so Claude loses marks here.

🍋 Grok

Grok exhibits some true toddler energy with this attempt. Whilst the font scores 10/10 for fun, the cut path is a wild and abstract offering that wouldn’t translate well to the sticker cutting machine. Better luck next time Grok.

Overall, the results from this challenge were surprisingly far from the mark, given that all these models are expert in coding, and svg files are essentially xml. The overall prize has to go to Gemini, which produced the best all-round result.
